Compositions
Maria Rullestad Teigen’s compositions are highly focused on broadening the scope of what being a percussionist means.
Her work Paddle & Roll (for solo snare drum & tap dance) focused on challenging the percussionist to also be a dancer and make music using their feet in a way which they aren’t commonly used to, whilst also being based on a project which worked to use tap dance technique to improve pedal technique for percussion players. Rehearsal No.1 (for distressed triangle player) forces the percussionist to take on the role of an actor, using only audio track and a small triangle to convey the stress of an orchestral percussionist who has a small part.
Accomplished Women is a mini-opera which forces all of it’s performers to combine art forms. All 3 performers have to act and interact with an audio-track, and the singer also has to dance. The work is based on the excerpt Accomplished Women from Jane Austin’s Pride & Prejudice, and takes on the topic of women’s rights and comparisons of how women were viewed in the 1800s and how they are viewed now. The mini-opera features a large embroidery ring as it’s focus set piece, a symbol of how embroidery has been used as both a means of liberation and restriction for women.
